The Supervisor- Supervisee Relationship
The supervisor-supervisee relationship is an important part of the journey to independent licensure. First And Foremost, Safety And Trust Are The Baseline For This Relationship. Whether you’re Fresh From Graduating School And Eager To Get Started Or Life Has Happened And You Need New Support, supervision is about learning and exploring unknown parts and Developing Your unique identity as a therapist.
Much like therapy, the trust you place in your supervisor can influence your work and how you feel as a clinician. I see my role as your Supervisor where, In Moments Of Doubt you have space to land softly, Guide you Through Sticky Spots, and celebrate the wins you will most definitely have.
Here are some of things you expect when choosing me as your supervisor:
This will always be a collaborative journey.
Open ears to voice concerns or anxieties when you’re unsure about what steps to take with a client in crisis or doubts about the future,
exploration of the challenges therapists and clients alike experience with racial, ethnic, cultural, sexual and disability identities, as well as policy matters. These all impact our work in & out of the room, and open dialogue is key to growing.
Firm redirection when clinical judgment needs additional support (tools, resources, or Research)
If I don’t have the answer, I will seek to get you the best answer I can
Being a fellow clinician of color, it is my privilege to provide space for newly licensed and marriage and family therapist associates (LMFT associates) of color. While the field of therapy was not created by or for us POCs (people of color), we have and will continue to create more spaces for ourselves. I highlight and encourage supervisees to see how diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds influence us as clinicians, as well as the clients’ experiences we witness. Learning and adapting various models and ancient healing practices to help support your clients and their needs is always highly encouraged.
My goal is to provide the space for you to develop and flesh out your skills to be a confident, competent, independent practitioner. My style for supervision will be dependent on you and your needs. I draw from a primarily person-centered model and incorporate cognitive behavioral, relational, and solution-focused models to inform our work together. You’ve worked hard to learn the models and skills and now’s the time to put those skills into Practice.
